Program Information

This international conference, celebrating the centennial of the original performance of Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring), will provide participants with a range of intellectual and physical interactions into and with the work.

The conference will feature papers and panels presented by scholars from dance, music, theatre, and other disciplines. The interplay of interdisciplinarity and creativity that were integral to the original collaboration between Stavinsky, Nijinsky, and Roerich will be reflected in the composition of the conference sessions, with presenters grouped by common themes rather than by discipline. Throughout the conference, scholars, artists, and artist-scholars will have opportunities to explore, discuss and debate Le Sacre du printemps, its influence, and its impact from a variety of perspectives.

Confirmed presenters include:

  • Lynn Garafola, who will deliver the keynote address.
  • Kevin “DJ Renegade” Gopie, who will discuss the Ballet Boyz version of The Rite of Spring, and lead a workshop in which some of the movements employed in the Ballet Boyz’ Rite will be taught.
  • Gregory Ristow, who will use movement exercises drawn from Dalcroze Eurhythmics to access some of the rhythmic complexities of Stravinsky’s score.

The philosophical approach underpinning the conference is the active breaking down of disciplinary silos, providing a venue where expanded conversations and new connections can be made. We look forward to seeing you there!
